Taking Stock of 2016

I just have time for one more task before I’m off work for the rest of today and tomorrow. So, I’m quickly updating my biz plan from 2016. This means I’m looking at all the concrete financial goals I set for the year and seeing which ones I met and which ones I didn’t. I’ll need to do some more analysis next week, asking myself questions like:

For my various income streams (speaking, teaching, work-for-hire books, etc.), how does my income compare, and how much time did I put into each one? What other rewards do I get from those activities besides income? I’m feeling too scattered, so which income-producing activities should I perhaps bow out of and which should I ramp up? To earn a living, you have to do various things–but my “various” things have turned into too many things.

I’m leaving my trade book writing (traditional books, written out of love and a need to write them) out of these questions, because that activity is non-negotiable and non-questionable:>)

I do know I reached my income goal for 2016, so that’s a good starting point. Now, I’m off to look at the particulars. Do you have a business plan? If you want a writing career (as opposed to a hobby, which is also a fine goal), then you need a business plan. Next week, I’ll also update my plan for 2017. Who’s in?

Thanks for the reminder! I haven’t ever written a business plan. I’m not sure where to start so I’m putting that on my to-do list of things to figure out.
