Networking Tip: Don’t sell yourself; sell a friend!

I am terrible at “selling myself.” Recently, Lerner sent me to the School Library Journal Summit cocktail party, where authors circulated to share their most recent books with 1-200 school librarians. Ack! But pairing up makes everything easier! I walked around with author/illustrator Nancy Carlson, whose new book is Sometimes You Barf (ha!). We would approach a table and I would ask librarians if they had gotten their barf bags yet–the promo items Nancy was handing out.

She, in turn, would introduce me or say something about my new book, A Rock Can Be…. It was lovely. I’m much better at bragging on someone else’s great books and clever promo items than my own! And you get to start or build a relationship with whomever you walk around with. Win-win.
